Design Inspiration

MK-1949 traces its lineage to the deck watches issued to the British Royal Navy — particularly the rare submarine-issued variants with ivory-white dials engineered for maximum legibility in dim, salt-laden confines. Where the KM-1940 honors the German Kriegsmarine deck watch, the MK-1949 captures the Royal Navy submarine variant: the one that went beneath the surface. White dial, high-contrast numerals, a triangle index at 12 — every element was specified for a crew that read time by emergency lighting.

Dial Craft

The dial is a soft matte ivory-white — not the flat white of a modern watch, but the warm, slightly creamy tone that vintage radium dials have aged into over decades. PHG’s finishing process reproduces that aged warmth as a deliberate design choice, not as an accident of time. A bold triangle index sits at 12 o’clock — the universal military mark for orientation at a glance — while Arabic numerals and a clean railroad minute track maintain fast readability under any lighting condition.

Lume

C3 Super-LumiNova is applied to the hour indices and hands. The green glow is modern in performance — bright, long-lasting, consistent — but visually it echoes the warm green of vintage radium. In daylight the dial reads as an old watch. In darkness it performs like a new one.

Movement

Powered by the Seiko VH31 mecha-quartz (Central Seconds) — sweeping seconds hand at 4 beats per second, quartz accuracy (±20 sec/month), no ticking, no winding. The sweep of the seconds hand across the white dial is the visual signature of this piece: it moves like a mechanical watch, runs like a quartz.

Case Geometry

316L stainless steel, 36mm diameter. The case features horizontal brushing — a directional grain that runs parallel to the wrist — distinct from the standard vertical finish on other PHG models. The horizontal lines catch light differently, giving the steel a subtle, rippled character that changes with the angle. Box-style K1 or sapphire crystal with double-sided coating — anti-reflective on the inside, scratch-resistant on the outside. Push-pull crown, 50m water resistance.
