Why do so many classic watches favor Arabic numerals?
1, 2, 3, 4… The numerals themselves are not complex. Yet placed inside a round dial, they carry remarkable visual power.
Especially on military watches.
Compared with Roman numerals, Arabic numerals are more direct – recognized in an instant. And once the numerals, minute track and hands form a clear hierarchy, the whole dial produces a very definite sense of order.
That is why I am drawn to Arabic-numeral dials. It is not decorative design. The numerals themselves are the skeleton of the dial.
On many vintage military watches the numerals are huge, bold and black, often occupying a remarkable share of the dial. And yet it never looks wrong. It feels genuinely right – because every element has its own place.
This is a very pure form of aesthetics: the sense of order that comes from legibility.
Today, many modern watches keep adding elements in the pursuit of complexity and luxury. But sometimes the things that truly endure are exactly the opposite.
One circle. Twelve numerals. One track of markers. Three hands. Then nothing more.
That is the dial I love.
EL DISEÑO DEBERÍA VIVIR FINALMENTE EN LA MUÑECA.
