Many men’s watches today run 40mm, 42mm or larger. But look back at classic military watches and you will notice something interesting: 36mm was extremely common.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Because a military watch is, first and foremost, a tool. It needed to be clearly readable – but never relied on sheer size for presence.<\/p>\n

36mm provides enough dial area while staying light, compact and unobtrusive in movement and wear.<\/p>\n

More importantly, 36mm forces the designer to take proportion seriously.<\/p>\n

The numerals cannot be too large. The markers cannot be too dense. The hands cannot be too short. The lugs cannot be too long. Not a millimeter of dial space can be wasted.<\/p>\n

Everything has to be exactly right.<\/p>\n

That is why I find 36mm such a fascinating size. It is not “a big watch, scaled down”. It is a complete design proportion.<\/p>\n

That is also why so many PHG watches hold the line at 36mm. We do not shrink the case for the sake of being vintage – we choose this size because it belongs to the classic military design language itself.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, restraint is its own kind of strength.<\/p>\n
